Friends,
After a little more than eight years in San Francisco, I have moved back to Europe. I’m going to be living in Malmö, Sweden, from now on. I have lived there once before, about 12 years ago. But I was a different person then, and Malmö was a different place. I’m looking forward to reacquainting myself.
The last few months have been strange for everyone. My writing has naturally taken a backseat. I hope this new move will free up some more time to pick it up again. Until then, here’s some cultural summer recommendations for you in the (socially distant) hammock.
Best,
Björn
Things I’ve written
- Designing with asymmetry: Enabling people to share an experience in different ways My latest short essay on why experiences don’t need to be identical to be shared. And how this is especially true for family media.
- Next stop: Malmö, Sweden An update on what I’ve been working on for the last few months.
- Joining the board of Rovio Aa short note to say that I’ve joined the board of Rovio, the Finnish company behind Angry Birds. Very excited and proud of this.
Three things to enjoy on a summer break
- Book: Uncanny Valley: A Memoir, by Anna Wiener What could be more appropriate after moving from San Francisco than reading a memoir about the odd, alternate reality that is Silicon Valley. It’s sharp, well-written, and very familiar.
- Article: Why United Airlines Wants to Risk a Run on the Bank, from The Diff Byrne Hobart walks through how United uses their loyalty program as bank collateral. A peek into a different world.
- Podcast: The Confrontation, by Invisibilia A beautifully told audio story about a very different kind of weekend retreat for high schoolers.
